Direct Access makes self-referral for physical therapy easy in Minnesota.

Here are the Direct Access laws in Minnesota, as described by the American Physical Therapy Association:

Minnesota is one of 26 states that allow direct patient access to physical therapy with some provisions. Before pursuing direct access to physical therapy in Minnesota, get familiar with these guidelines:

A physical therapist in Minnesota treating direct access patients is contingent upon the following:

A physical therapist may not determine medical diagnosis.

A patient may be seen by a physical therapist without referral for up to 90 days under direct access physical therapy in Minnesota.

A physical therapist who has been licensed for less than one year may only provide direct access to physical therapy services in Minnesota when working alongside a physical therapist who has more than one year of practicing experience.

The physical therapist must refer the patient to an appropriate healthcare professional if the physical therapist feels that the patient’s care goes beyond his or her scope of practice.

A physical therapist may treat a patient via direct access physical therapy in Minnesota without a time limitation if the patient is seeing the PT for disease prevention, wellness, fitness education, or exercise services.
