Originally from New York, Catherine Toner trained for her Masters in Physical Therapy at Northumbria University, located in Newcastle upon Tyne, in North East England. Passionate about her role as caregiver, with a great record of successful outcomes, her training in the U.K. translates beautifully to treatment programs here at Orthology. She’s always putting others first, and knows that building a relationship of trust with a patient is the foundation of great care. The rewards are many. Seeing patients achieve their goals is sheer joy! Focused on long-term health, Catherine knows that when patient and practitioner work together and communicate, the recovery process is transformed. She’s always educating patients about their condition. It’s a team effort, maintained by sincere and open dialogue. By keeping each patient fully engaged in their own treatment, the path to restoring full function is much easier–and shorter. People stay committed to treatment in the clinic and especially in the work they do at home. Catherine has seen the benefits in her practice again and again. When she’s not working, Catherine is dedicated to staying fit. She especially loves to swim. She’s also known to a little shopping, and enjoys spending time with friends and family. She is certified in Sports Rehabilitation and the Graston Technique, which uses patented instruments to treat acute, chronic, and post-surgical soft tissue injuries.
Orthology is an extraordinary team of providers, with a wide-range of backgrounds, educational experience and cultural touchstones. Sharon is a welcome addition—and fits right in! When put on the spot by the question “if a friend or family member had to describe you in one word, what would it be and why?” Sharon stepped up to the challenge—as she has in all her endeavors: “Adaptive. Having grown up overseas, attending school in both Asia and in the states, I’ve been exposed to many different cultures, beliefs and personalities. As a result, I’ve learned how to grow and adjust to a multitude of different situations.” What better trait could a physical therapist have than the ability to “adjust to a multitude of different situations?” Indeed, the fundamental notion at Orthology is that each patient is unique, their pain personal, and care is customized to fit that individual’s needs. A graduate of Massachusetts General Hospital, Institute of Health Professions, Sharon loves traveling, exercising, reading –and especially running. She knew from an early age that she wanted to work in the health related field, but it wasn’t until her college years that she really explored what she calls “the dynamic and ever-evolving field of physical therapy.” She embraces the challenge of making clinical decisions, the opportunity to help individuals change their lifestyle through movement and exercises, and working with patients through the entirety of their care—and ultimately, to enjoy long-term health!

Yannis Emmanuel Mavrommatakis earned his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Columbia University, where he specialized in adult neuro-rehabilitation while maintaining a deep interest in sport rehabilitation. Yannis grew up in England and studied in London, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, a Master’s Degree in Neuroscience and a PhD in Developmental Neurobiology at University College London. He came to New York to work as a research scientist at Columbia University in the Genetics and Development department, where he worked for eight years analyzing the eyes of fruit flies. While coaching the Columbia Medical School rugby team, Yannis suffered a serious knee injury and underwent physical therapy at Orthology. It was the high-quality treatment he received at Orthology that sparked his interest in physical therapy and sent him back to school to study once more and embark on his second career. Yannis believes in using evidence-based practice and designs individualized rehabilitation protocols to reduce pain and restore function. As a former patient himself, Yannis understands the importance of effective physical therapy and resuming normal physical activities as soon as possible. He’ll provide the knowledge, support, and encouragement you need to help you attain your goals. Yannis also has a passion for travel photography, rugby, soccer and the occasional pint of ice cream.
Jun Zhu Zhang earned his degree of Doctor of Physical Therapy with Honors from Columbia University, completing an Advanced Orthopedic Track. As a native New Yorker, Jun graduated Magna Cum Laude from Skidmore College, receiving a Bachelors of Science degree in Health and Exercise Sciences. After Skidmore, Jun worked at NYSportsMed/Orthology as a PT Aide, assisting patients in their rehabilitation journey. It was here that his passion for helping others grew along with the knowledge that the application of evidence based techniques led to better, faster results. Jun became a physical therapist to play a vital part in patient journeys towards health and wellness. He believes that living a healthy life and making health conscious decisions are not always easy, rather they take time, practice, diligence and consistency. This thought process translates similarly to many injuries, aches and pains. He strives to reach both short and long term goals by easing each patient’s unique concerns and helping them to understand their injury at all levels– emotional, intellectual, and musculoskeletal. Friends and family describe him as “positive,” and there is no doubt his patients would say the same. Jun’s “can-do” optimism, aptitude for problem solving, and unshakeable determination make him pivotal in a therapeutic setting. As Jun states, “I believe that it is up to me to help guide you, and for you to make the decisions and put in the effort. Full function is restored by inspiring confidence that they will get back to doing the things they love.” Jun continues to be a fierce advocate for every patient’s overall fitness, knowing that being active is the real path toward lifelong good health.
